WI April 2015 011Two weeks tomorrow Rich and I tie the knot and get married at Guildford Registry office.  For our reception we are off to a beautiful restaurant which is a stunning 17th century converted church, a short stroll from home. https://www.belandthedragon-godalming.co.uk/ At the moment I feel like I have spreadsheets coming out of my ears but am feeling very prepared and of course VERY EXCITED about starting the Spring in style as Mrs Cross! As of the 17th of April this year I will be known as Kate Cross by everyone so expect to see some changes to my website.

I have now completed anemone buttonholes for the mum’s so that they are able to wear these on the day and then keep them forever. My gorgeous niece Pheobe Farrer will be wearing a delicate anemone on a headband to match the mums. My sis-in -law Carol Cross is making our cake topper to match my beautiful bouquet of flowers. She makes the most stunning icing flowers that are far too good to eat and I can’t wait to post images of these…

I know you will all want to share in our wedding with us so I will be putting more wedding pics on my blog at the beginning of May as we are off to the New Forest for a Mini Moon after our wedding day. For our Honeymoon we are off to Florence and lake Garda at the end of June.

The RSN have asked me to write a book on the technique of Appliqué and I have been researching the history of the technique – looking at how the technique relates to quilts, banners and where it has developed from. Did you know that the earliest example of Appliqué is an item of clothing that was found in Tutankhamun’s grave? Currently, there is no true Appliqué book that details appliqué techniques in full so my aim to write a comprehensive technical guide and be able to share my embroidery skills further.

I have launched new hand embroidery classes in Winchester. The next class available is with Lizzy Lansberry on the 13th and 14th of June. Bookings must be made by the end of the first week of May.

Developing Jacobean Embroidery – Lizzie Lansberry – Saturday the 13 of June and Sunday the 14 June – 10am – 4pm. Class cost £120 plus class kit of £28.00

With guidance from your tutor Lizzy, you will plan where to place stitches within your chosen design, creating your own unique embroidery.

Jacobean Crewel Tree of LifeThe cost of each class is payable when booking along with the class kit cost. All class materials and refreshments are provided. Please note that lunch is not included in this price.

Finally Moved

We are now settled in our new home right on top of a hill and have a stunning views over the South Downs…

View from House websizejpg In the move and when I unpacked I opened a few boxes and in one of them contained a cross stitch book with a piece of cross stitch and rusty needle that I had planned out on graph paper within the book. It was lovely to stumble on something that I had started at the age of around 11. Cross stitch was the humble beginnings of my career in embroidery.

ButterfliesMy regular ladies who come for private tuition (Jane, Mavis, Caroline and Jean) have now completed their silk and stmpwork butterflies and are now working on the seashells goldwork kit and have created some beautiful pieces of work for themselves. The image below is of silkshaded butterflies together which has been a wonderful project and should cheer you all up in this horrid weather today.

2014-03-08 PATCHWORK NEEDLECASE DAY (22)Recently, I have been spending a lot of time up in London and a few weeks ago we went to see the Wedding dress exhibition on at the V and A. There were some beautiful examples of lace and hand embroidery and the gallery’s at the V and A provided lots of inspiration for designing future projects. Next year my private students are going to be combing all their skills into individual pieces of work that showcase embroidery techniques such as Appliqué, Silkshading, Stumpwork and Goldwork. I hope to be able to post a few images of their work.

I am now preparing to teach Appliqué at the RSN on the 29th and 30th of November. The class includes appliqué, silver threads and some surface stitching such as silkshading and satin stitch. Currently, there is availability on the class so if you would like to join us then click on the link to view the project and also make a booking;
