Educated in Embroidery

Kate completed her RSN Apprenticeship with Distinction after gaining a degree in Art for Public Space. Upon completion of the Apprenticeship Program from the Royal School of Needlework, Kate went on to complete a PGCE in education. Kate is passionate about teaching and has a strong ethos for retaining the heritage and skill of hand embroidery.

Kate teaches a wide range of traditional embroidery techniques. She has a natural flair for design and her designs are inspired by heritage. Kate’s classes are relaxed and friendly, and students are encouraged to develop embroidery skills at their own pace with the help of Kate’s clear instructions.

Kate’s online classes are taught through zoom and run on Tuesday evenings and some Thursday evenings from 7.30pm-9.30pm. All the class costs listed below include online tuition, kit and kit postage. As part of the online classes Kate also offers her students ongoing feedback.

Online – Whitework Monogramming – 8th and 15th June 2021 from 7.30pm -9.30pm

Have you ever wanted to learn the art of monogramming in embroidery? Its wonderfully sophisticated to have hand sewn initials on a treasured garment. In this class you will be able to pick your own initial and be guided through stitches such as; ladder stitch, stem, trailing and padded satin stitch. Prior to the class you will need to inform Kate of your choice of letter so that they can be put together in a beautiful individual design for each student.

The class cost is £70 to UK students and £90 internationally.


Online – Fine Whitework Embroidery – 22nd of June. 13th and 20th of July. 5th and 26th of August. 2nd and 7th of September 2021 from 7.30- 9.30pm

This class will be a series of 7 evening lessons. It will be technically advanced but will build through skill levels. You will be able to choose to work on either a very fine count of linen or a fine count. The design will be based on the theme of looking out from a window onto a beautiful courtyard cottage garden. The design will include lots of stitches and textures. In this class you can expect to complete the following techniques; lace net darning patterns, reverse applique, pulledwork, drawn thread, a wide range of surface stitches, satin patterns and various eyelets including needle woven and more. The design is worked on the very fine linen, but this is easily adapted for students’ requirements to work on the fine linen.

The class cost is £350 to UK students and £375 internationally.


Online – Advanced Monogramming – 3rd, 10th, 12th and 24th of August 2021 from 7.30pm to 9.30pm

This class will allow you to combine your own choice of two or three letters from a set font that works well for embroidery. This class will build on skills learnt from the initial monogramming class. It’s recommended that the monogram class is completed prior to you attending this class. Stitches you will learn include; whitework beading, trailing, eyelets, satin and padded satin, seeding, voided satin and many more! Prior to the class you will need to inform Kate of your choice of letters so that they can be put together in a beautiful design for each individual student.

The class cost is £170 to UK students and £195 internationally.


Face – to – Face – Goldwork and Silkshaded Sparrow. – 16th of October 2021 from 10am -4pm

Introducing Little Miss. Sparrow in all her splendour!

This is a five-hour class you will be taught the art of silkshading and lustrous goldwork techniques. This class will be taught at the Quakers Meeting House in Winchester through ‘Embroidery Now’.

Online – Autumn Gold – Introduction to Silkshading and Goldwork – 5th and 19th of October 2021 from 7.30pm – 9.30pm

This seasonal two-part class will introduce students to the artform of Silkshading and then Goldwork. In the first class you will learn how to shade using long and short stitch. In the second class you will be able to add beautiful gold textures to the design. Kate will show you how to work with rococco, twist and pearl- purl threads.

The class cost is £75 to UK students and £100 internationally.


Online – Goldwork Cosmos- 9th and 23rd and 25th of November 2021 from 7.30pm – 9.30pm

This class is aimed at students who have completed an introduction class. In this class you will be able to advance your skills in silkshading. In the first class you will develop the technique of silkshading. In subsequent classes you will learn how to pad metalwork embroidery with two types of padding; felt padding and string padding. Specialist gold threads such as pearl -purl, bright check, passing and smooth purl will be added to complete this dazzling piece of embroidery.

The class cost is £115 to UK students and £140 internationally.


Online – Mastering Silkshading – Christmas Hellebore Rose – 7th, 9th, 14th and 16th of December 2021 from 7.30pm – 9.30pm

Prepare for Christmas with this stunning Christmas Hellebore rose design! The design is on a pure silk background and supplied to you with a harmonious pallet of stranded cottons. This beautifully bold embroidery is designed to enable you to learn how to mix colours to create differing shades. In this series of classes, you will master long and short stitch and confidently be able to turn angles within designs. Surface stitches will be added to the centre of the flower for a final flourish.

Online – Silver Snowdrop – 11th, 18th, 25th January and 1st of February 2022 from 7.30pm – 9.30pm

Learn the art of metal thread embroidery in this exquisite silver snowdrop design with a pure silk dupion background. You will explore many essential techniques within this design. In the first class you will learn how to pad metalwork embroidery with two types of padding; felt padding and string padding. In the three subsequent classes you will explore the following techniques; pearl- purl, couching, cutwork, s’ing and basketweave. This class has been designed as four sessions so that you will learn at an appropriate pace to the design.

The class cost is £190 to UK students and £215 internationally.


Online – Introduction to Embroidery -Surface Stitches – Claris Cliff Inspired Teacup – 1st and 8th of February 2022 from 7.30pm – 9.30pm

Whether you’re a complete beginner or just a bit ‘rusty’ this is a great place to start. This introduction to Embroidery will introduce you to a range of stitches and show you examples of techniques to help you decide what to try next.

Working to a set design inspired by Clarice Cliff, Kate will provide all the materials you need. As well as offering an excellent introduction to embroidery, this class allows you to explore the vast array of stitches and wide variety of techniques on offer.

The class cost is £75 to UK students and £100 internationally.


Online – Developing Surface Embroidery Stitches – Claris Cliff Inspired Teapot 22nd, 25th of February and 1st of March 2022 from 7.30pm – 9.30pm

This class will develop your skills leading on from an Introduction to surface embroidery stitches. Working to a set design inspired by Clarice Cliff, we will provide all the materials you need. You may have worked the Claris Cliff teacup as an Introduction to Embroidery prior to this. The teapot would sit nicely beside the cup. In this class your skills will be stretched by teaching you a wide variety of stitches including padded satin stitch, chain stitch, coral stitch, herringbone stitch, seeding and fishbone along with many more.

Online – Whitework Easter Bunny -8th, 15th and 22nd of March 2022 from 7.30pm – 9.30pm from 7.30pm – 9.30pm

Get ready for Easter with this pretty whitework design! This design is aimed to develop your embroidery skills, you will start off with more basic techniques. Throughout the classes you will progress steadily onto more advanced techniques. Techniques that you will learn include; pulledwork, drawn threads, surface stitches, ribbonwork and eyelets.

The class cost is £115 to UK students and £140 internationally.


Online – Silkshaded Fuchsia – 3rd, 10th and 17th of May 2022 from 7.30pm – 9.30pm

Develop your skills in the sumptuous technique of silkshading. This elegant fuchsia design on silk background fabric will enable you to learn how to mix colours to create differing shades. Kate has designed this kit so that you will have a good grounding and ability in filling and shading within different shapes. In this series of classes, you will master long and short stitch and confidently be able to turn angles within designs. As part of the design you will also learn stem stitch, bullion stitch and split stitch.

Online – Goldwork Seashells – 31st of May and then 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th of June 2022 from 7.30pm – 9.30pm

The design is set on two pieces of coloured silk dupion to emphasise the beach setting. This kit has been designed by Kate to further students’ skills to an advanced level. If you have experienced some metalthread work before, then this could be the class for you. In the first session you will learn how to pad your design with both felt and string. Subsequent classes will be paced so that students become skilled in goldwork techniques. Techniques that you will cover include; Pearl- purl, couching, chipping, cutwork and platework.
